Love to sweat, live to skate, skate to win

Sunday morning the Cyclone women stepped up the defense, allowing only 24 shots on net, Majetic deflecting all but three.

After a powerful first period, the Cyclones and the Gophers left the ice without scores. The score remained 0-0 until well into the second period.

The first goal was scored unassisted by captain Piper Wall. The Gophers responded with two goals in the last few minutes of the second period.

Nordstrom scored big in the third period with an assist from Martling and closed the gap 2-3. With just over two minutes left in the game, Minnesota received a minor penalty.

At this time the Ames/ISU rink manager on duty ordered a running clock without notifying coaches, referees or players. The women turned up the pressure in a five-on- four.

Pulling Majetic, Iowa State added a sixth player with less than a minute to go. However, the 110 percent given by the women was not enough to beat the clock or officiating, as the game ended with one of the Gopher defenseman covering the puck with her hand in the crease.

Martling, Korhorst and Leslie Taylor each had a shot on net, while Wall and Nordstrom each had five.

The ISU Women’s Hockey Team would like to thank our devoted fans who have supported us at our recent home games. What many Iowa Staters may not realize (due to the Daily’s inability to print even one of the many press releases submitted) is that the ISU Women’s Hockey Team has been having a fantastic season.

The team’s hard work and dedication have led to wins over University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, Whitewater, Janesville, Concordia College and Grand Forks.

The Cyclone women not only had big wins during away games, but, with the excellent goal tending of Majetic and Lindsay Williams, completely shut out Whitewater 10-0 and Janesville 7-0.

Whitewater was one of the sweetest wins because the ISU women taught Wisconsin the meaning of “Cyclone” hockey just before the ISU men took the ice to really school them.

It is our goal to develop a program that compliments the extraordinary men’s hockey team.

We would like all of our fellow students, faculty and fans to know that we are serious about hockey.

We love to sweat.

We live to skate.

We skate to win.

We play hockey because it’s fast and it’s physical. We play hockey for ISU because we’re proud to be Cyclones.

Iowa State women will play Bethel in Minneapolis on Feb. 5, St. Mary’s in Winona on Feb. 20, and then participate in the league tournament March 5, 6 and 7.
