New Kids gear up for release of greatest hits

A few minor adjustments have been made since last week’s column regarding the Rolling Stones’ tour.

Green Day has decided not to participate in the tour. Green Day’s publicist told Rocktropolis, “We were, at one point, confirmed, then at the last minute (the band) decided to return to the studio to work on the new album.”

Bryan Adams will fill the spots that Green Day left open in Anaheim, and Jonny Lang will open for the Minneapolis show on Feb. 15 at the Target Center. Lang will play Stephens Auditorium in Ames on Feb. 12.

Upcoming Releases

Riding the wave of pretty boy band mania, New Kids on the Block has decided to release a greatest hits set. Between 1988 and 1991, N.K.O.T.B. sold more than 17 million albums in the U.S. alone, and the group is looking to add to that number with its Feb.16 release.

Upcoming Performances

Finally getting its act together, Fool’s Journey will play its first show of the year at The Que in Iowa City.

The band, consisting of former Ames residents, has not been performing during the last few months. The group’s absence is partially due to the fact that its drummer left to spend a semester in Washington and its bassist had other commitments.

But on Jan. 29, the band’s slump is expected to end.

Joint Syndrome, consisting solely of chiropractic students, will be opening.

Greg Brown will be appearing at the M-Shop next Friday for the bargain price of $8. The seasoned folk veteran is respected by lyricists and musicians alike throughout the Midwest and beyond. Eight dollars is quite a deal to be in the realm of such a legend.

Through the Grapevine

A big screen production of “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle” is looking to fill the role of Natasha Fatale, and Mariah Carey might just be the lady for the job.

She screen-tested for the seductive secret agent after the holidays, according to MTV News. Based on the cartoon, the film has already cast Jason Alexander to play Boris Badenov and Robert DeNiro to play Fearless Leader.

Shooting will begin in February, but you’ll have to wait until next year to find out whether the songbird got the part.

In other musician-turned-actor news, Jon Bon Jovi is currently shooting a World War II submarine flick in Italy titled “U-571.”

This is not the first time the ’80s rock star has been in a film (recall “Homegrown” and “No Looking Back”), but hopefully it will be the last.
