Santa’s list: an alien, chicks in bikinis…

Moss Pit & Dark Knight

Editor’s note: 2 DJs and a Boombox is exactly that. Dark Knight, a popular radio personality, and Moss Pit, a local mobile music DJ, play a few tunes for each other and let their thoughts flow.

Dark Knight and Moss Pit: One, two, three …

DK: Yeah, paper covers rock!

“I Want An Alien For Christmas”

Fountains of Wayne

DK: I’m gonna go with the non-traditional Christmas song. I just got this in last night. It’s funny.

MP: Ooh, I love Fountains of Wayne. Did you know the lead singer from Fountains of Wayne wrote that song “That Thing You Do” from that movie?

DK: Did he? Amazing. You know, this sounds like a Wonders song.

MP: It does have that happy pop sound. If you listen to the Fountains of Wayne record, you can tell he wrote that song.

DK: They’ve got that Ringo, bounce your head kinda thing going.

MP: They’re a fun band.

DK: “I Want An Alien For Christmas” — that’s too funny. Me personally, a few years ago my sister asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I said, Rachel Hunter in a bow, nothing else.

MP: Did you get it?

DK: No. I did get a Rachel Hunter calendar in a bow, though. I should’ve been more specific.

“Merry Christmas Baby”

Hanson

MP: This is from the “Jack Frost” soundtrack.

DK: You know what, I’ve been told by record people that they’ll probably release “Gimme Some Lovin'” from this record as a single.

His voice is too high to sing this part.

MP: Have you ever heard Bruce Springsteen’s version of this? It’s awesome.

DK: You gotta have a voice like that to do this song. They haven’t been through puberty long enough to have the cojones to belt this out.

I had to laugh — I saw a kid the other night at The River; I swear he was Taylor. I made the bartenders card him. He looked just like him. So every once and a while me or someone else would go up to him and ask, “Where are Isaac and Zac?”

MP: They had that Christmas album last year, but I never heard it.

DK: I heard a couple songs off it; they were OK. There’s just certain things that, because they’re Hanson, they shouldn’t do. And ballsy Christmas songs fall in that category.

MP: Like “Little Drummer Boy.”

“Mele Kalikimaka”

Bing Crosby

DK: This is a classic Christmas song from a classic Christmas movie.

MP: I love Bing Crosby’s voice.

DK: Oh, it’s killer. And he does all the classics.

MP: I can’t figure out what movie this is in.

DK: “Christmas Vacation.” It’s when he’s looking out the window and dreaming about the pool in the back yard. He’s seeing all the family around and then Eddy comes strolling out wearing nothing but a big ol’ duck and pair of underwear.

MP: That’s the best “Vacation” movie.

DK: When it gets really close to Christmas, I’ll throw this one on, ’cause it’s just fun. You get this picture of sexually attractive women, Santa and some reindeer hanging out on the beach.

MP: All the women have Santa hats on, and of course, bikinis.

“O Holy Night”

N’ Sync

MP: After I posed with them, I feel obligated to play something from this.

DK: What is it with this pose? The one hand reaching out. To me, it’s just like going, “Come on, give me your money. Buy our CDs.” And this kid’s here is saying, “Get me a stylist. Fix this hair.”

MP: Too long of an intro, but not bad once they start going. A capella, you have to give them some credit.

DK: It’s kinda weird, two of these guys were on the “Mickey Mouse Club” with Britney Spears and some chick from “Boy Meets World.”

MP: The best version of this song is by Tevin Campbell on one of those “Very Special Christmas” CDs.

DK: Oh yeah, that is good. Tevin Campbell was one of Prince’s discoveries. We still play “Round and Round.”

MP: This song has gone way down hill.

DK: When you start messing too much with the arrangement, that’s bad. Christmas music is something you don’t mess with.

MP: What’s sad is that kids are going to buy this CD, and this is how they are going to know this song 20 years from now.
