Nurse released from hospital after being hit by truck

Iowa State’s starting point guard Michael Nurse was released from Mary Greeley Medical Center Monday evening after being hit by a truck while trying to cross Lincoln Way Sunday night.
Nurse, 21, had just returned to Ames from the Cyclones’ Thanksgiving break trip to the Great Alaska Shootout when the accident happened.
Cyclone men’s head basketball coach Larry Eustachy said Nurse and other team members were crossing Lincoln Way from Hilton Coliseum on their way to their dorm rooms in the Maple-Willow-Larch residence halls.
The accident occurred Sunday at 10:50 p.m., according to police reports.
Nurse was struck by a 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck going west on Lincoln Way, said Corp. Jim Johnson of the Ames Police Department.
The initial accident report stated there was no evidence the truck was traveling at an excessive speed.
Johnson said no citations or charges have been issued to the driver, Christopher Hovey, 24, 4400 Westbrook Lane, as of yet. The investigation is ongoing and will not be completed until late this week, he said.
Eustachy, who had visited Nurse in the hospital, said Nurse received stitches in his head and leg.
“It’s a tragedy that it happened,” he said. “We’re just really thankful that nothing more serious happened.”
Nurse had a strong showing last week at the shootout, helping the Cyclones with assists and double-digit scoring.
Eustachy said he is unsure as to when Nurse will be fully recovered from his injuries and able to return for play.
The Cyclones will be on the road again Wednesday when they travel to Northern Iowa to take on the Panthers.
