My Scarlet Life goes ‘Dansin’
November 12, 1998
When My Scarlet Life decided to release a remix record, members of the five-piece electronica group had a hard time narrowing down the list of possible remixers.
So they didn’t.
They sent the original 24-track master tapes of “BuzzBomb” and “Trypnotica” to 18 remixers with instructions to choose a song and use whatever parts they wished. No rules.
“Every other day I’d get a DAT tape in the mail with shocking versions of our songs, the way I’d never conceived of them before,” My Scarlet Life’s Preston Klik exclaimed. “It was fun. They changed the songs a lot!”
For the recently released “Danse Amour,” the group selected 12 tunes, seven from “BuzzBomb” and five from “Trypnotica.”
Klik discussed each of the tracks from his Chicago home earlier this week:
“Snakepit of Hell — Black Limbo remix”
TheImmortalSavant, who’s planning on having a CD on DivaNation [Klik’s record label] in February, kicked up the dance quotient of “Black Limbo” — one of our strongest live songs — with a solid four-to-the-floor beat and new chords. Turns any dance floor into a snakepit.
“Secrets — Myst remix”
The ballad “Myst” got almost disco-ized by Justin Mroz of Certain Distant Suns [on Columbia Records].
“Cloud Seeding — Cumulus remix”
A drums ‘n’ bass vibe, with some industrial overtones, with Christy’s [Cameron, My Scarlet Life] “Cumulus” vocals floating on top. [By Drew Pluta.]
“Layo-Layo — This Fine Line remix”
“This Fine Line” is already one of our dance favorites, so it’s fun to hear it even more driving, with a new bass line by Paul [Fini, My Scarlet Life]. Remixed by yours truly, keeping everyone’s favorite wordless vocal chorus.
“Dreamwalker — Other Worlds remix”
This remix came from St. Louis [by T. N. Gregory] with Julie’s [Schreiber, My Scarlet Life] vocals run through a “vocorder.”
“Tangled Web — Mourning remix”
Latching onto one simple vocal phrase, “tangled in your web,” led to this moody reworking of “Mourning.” The vocal interplay is a tangled web indeed.
“Here I Go Again — Reflection remix”
A Detroit re-mixer [Goink] mutates “Reflection” from trip-hop to double-time drums ‘n’ bass, quoting Amy’s [Spina, My Scarlet Life] signature guitar near the end.
“Valley Of Rage — Valley Of Rage remix”
We’d never heard any of our songs remixed until this came to us, and it inspired us to do a whole remix CD. Chris Greene, who masters all our CDs, added a whole new ambient vibe.
“Sore Muscle — Heartache remix”
The lead cut from “BuzzBomb,” “Heartache” went in a direction I never would have foreseen — ambient-tribal-noise.
“Runnin’ Thru The Forest — Saxifrage remix”
Another shocker, this sounds little like the original “Saxifrage” — but that’s the point. [By Matthew Crowley.]
“Goin’ South — Ruby Kisses remix”
Again, a snippet of the vocal from “Ruby Kisses” becomes the main hook, and four-to-the-floor again rules. The vocal interplay in the middle is one of my favorite spots on the CD if I may say so myself (I remixed it).
“Machine Rock — Crushed Desire remix”
As if you couldn’t tell, this was remixed by a heavy Gary Numan fan (he actually got Numan to sign his forearm and went directly to a tattoo shop and made it permanent.) “Crushed Desire” could never have sounded like Gary Numan, I would have thought — but that merely shows the limits of my imagination.
My Scarlet Life will perform the originals of these songs and more Saturday night at The M-Shop with Sliver opening. Tickets are $6, $5 for students, for the 9 p.m. show.
