Gettin’ crabby wit’ it

David Schladt

I was appalled when I read Peter Peterson’s editorial regarding Proposition 7 and the consumption of crab meat.

Mr. Peterson is obviously a dope addict. I am from Alaska. Only I truly understand the issue of crabs.

A crab is intelligent. It knows if it’s about to die, unlike the stupid lobster.

The crabs that are sold for consumption are usually all old and worthless. They have obviously earned the right to not be eaten.

Those crabs that are healthy are usually injured right before they are killed.

If you’re going to kill a crab, you shouldn’t make it suffer.

Besides, why would a crab owner sell a perfectly good crab (or an old and worthless one) for slaughter at a price that is usually less than what they paid for the crab?

That is just not efficient.

The reason for Proposition 7 wasn’t to provide “petting crabs.”

It was to keep crabs from being mistreated.

While it is true that Proposition 7 could have contained something about not mistreating crabs, I believe it is just easier to stop the whole system of crab selling.

Sure, it is unconstitutional and goes against our right of the pursuit of happiness, but that’s just the price we as a society should pay to make sure that a handful of crabs are treated with respect and dignity.

Anyone who disagrees with me must be cruel-hearted and fascist.
