‘How dry I am …’

John Hamilton

High attendance at alcohol-free events and a dramatic drop in the number of arrests made Veishea 1998 a success.

Students, University Administrators and the media all agreed that Veishea ’98 was a huge step in a better direction for Veishea.

As students, we should be proud that we successfully demonstrated to everyone that we understood our responsibility. It is now time for our student leaders to again decide the direction of Veishea. They are doing their jobs by encouraging debate over the future of Veishea.

Discussion of major issues is always very healthy for an organization, and I encourage this to continue throughout the year.

I hope our student leaders keep two points in mind.

Though last year was a huge success and reflected positively on the students, it was a stepping stone.

We still have a great distance to go in changing the image of Veishea and proving as a student body that we truly do care about maintaining a tradition that is safe and showcases what is great about Iowa State.

Student leaders do this by leading.

GSB needs to pass a resolution stating clearly and plainly that GSB supports the pledge of a safe and alcohol-free Veishea.

I look forward to another safe and alcohol-free Veishea and believe that we, as students, can take another step toward a better Veishea.
