MIS succeeds with seniors

The Management Information Systems Club has been actively teaching senior citizens computer skills at Heartland Senior Services.

Kerry Harts, senior in management information systems and director of public relations for the MIS Club, said members of the club taught “intermediate classes” at Heartland Senior Services.

Harts said Heartland contacted the club about teaching computer classes.

Kay Jones, assistant activities and resources director of Heartland Senior Services, said all senior citizen students who participated in the program already have graduated from Heartland’s month-long, eight-session basic computer class.

Jones said the program was popular.

“We got a massive response,” Jones said. “The senior students spoke very highly of the MIS students — I think they both got a lot out of this.”

Sarah Trenhaile, member of the MIS Club and senior in management information systems agreed.

“I thought it was a good experience,” she said.

Trenhaile said the senior citizen she worked with was thinking about buying her own computer.

The classes were a good philanthropy project for the club, she said.

Harts said the classes were one-on-one sessions between a club member and a Heartland senior citizen.

The class for each student consisted of two sessions each lasting two hours, Harts said. The sessions would take place on the same night for consecutive weeks, and two club members would teach classes at Heartland each weeknight.

Harts said the classes covered some of the basics of e-mail and the Internet.

Since the classes were such a success with both the MIS Club and Heartland Senior Services, Harts and Jones said the classes may be started again in the spring semester.
