Iowa universities to present strategic plans to regents

The Iowa State Board of Regents will discuss each university’s strategic plans in today’s meeting in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.

According to the Board of Regents docket, strategic plans are made by each of the regent universities — Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.

“Each university has a plan that guides [where they are going],” Regent Nancy Pellet said.

Pellet said each university draws up its own plan, which has to be approved by the regents and must be in accordance with the Board of Regents Strategic Plan.

The board has practiced strategic planning since the mid-1980s, and in recent years, planning efforts “have become more systematic with specific action steps for the board plan and indicators for the institutional plans,” according to the docket.

“[The meeting is meant] to help [the universities] to judge how much progress they have made through the year and specifically, how they’re coming toward their goals,” Pellet said.

Regent David Fisher said he believes the regent universities are on track. He said ISU in particular has made the necessary steps to become better.

“The board has been very pleased with the progress Iowa State has made in the last three or four years,” Fisher said.

According to the docket, ISU has six goals, which include:

  • strengthening undergraduate teaching, programs and services
  • strengthening graduate, professional and research programs
  • strengthening outreach and extension programs
  • sustaining and enhancing an intellectually stimulating environment and a supportive university community
  • establishing international leadership in the integration and effective use of information technology and computation services
  • strengthening initiatives to stimulate economic development.

The meeting will continue in the Sun Room through Thursday.
