Service helps faculty get creative
November 9, 1998
Every day students and faculty put together projects, presentations and lectures, and the Creative Services Team can use the best and newest technology available to help with these undertakings.
Creative Services, located in Exhibit Hall, provides many different services, such as Web page development, video production, editing, CD-ROM mastering and computer graphics, said James Twetten, manager of the team.
The team is just one part of a much larger organization, the Instructional Technology Center, he said.
“The ITC is very much a team of specialists. We’re a pretty big group working for university students, faculty and staff,” he said.
The team consists of 13 full-time employees with expertise in fields ranging from TV and radio technology to graphics, Twetten said.
Most of the projects the group has been involved in were done for the university or for professors, he said. While the team does occasionally do some projects for outside businesses or organizations, they do not actively pursue outside projects.
Michael Wilson, project coordinator for the Creative Services Team, said he creates videotapes and multimedia presentations. Members of the Creative Services Team are involved in different campus activities in addition to their projects, he said.
A specific program some members are involved in is the Cable 9 channel at ISU, which features programs coordinated and run by students.
Wilson particularly enjoys this area of his work.
“It’s great that we get the opportunity and support to get involved in some of the different programs and organizations on campus,” he said.
The team also is involved in some large public displays for the university, Twetten said, such as the ISU display at the Iowa State Fair. This is just one example of the 850 different projects that the group has helped with in the past year.
While not many students use the Creative Services Team, they are available for projects that require special elements. These projects do require a fee, however.
Past Creative Services Team projects have had prices ranging from $18 to $125,000, Twetten said.
The Creative Services Team has had an excellent tradition in production quality, Twetten said, winning more than 60 awards in videographics and media production. The most recent award was the Da Vinci Project Award.
Twetten said he enjoys working on projects that use a diverse combination of technologies.
“I think the most exciting stuff, for me, is the multimedia because it brings all the different mediums together,” he said.
The variety of skills needed to do his job makes for an interesting work environment, Wilson said.
“We have the opportunity to learn a little bit about a whole lot of different subjects,” he said. “We get the opportunity to be exposed to a whole lot of different knowledge fields. I enjoy that a lot.”
