A former temporary instructor was arrested and accused of firing a gun at two Iowa State students Saturday.

Mark Maggio, temporary instructor in transportation and logistics last year, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He was accused of firing two shots at a tractor carrying Dana Morgan, freshman in agricultural studies, and Nick Anderson, sophomore in agricultural studies.

Morgan declined comment at press time. Anderson was unavailable for comment.

The incident occurred at 390th Street and Wilson Avenue in Scott Township, about 20 miles north of Ames, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s office. The sheriff received the complaint at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mike Crum, chairman of the transportation and logistics department, said Maggio worked for the university for one year while faculty were on leave, and he left the department in May.

“His appointment was a one-year appointment, from last August until this May,” he said.

Maggio had also worked for the university several years ago, according to Crum.

Maggio taught several transportation and logistics classes last spring, including TrLog 360, a course in business logistics.
