Milli Vanilli rules

Moss Pit & Dark Knight

Editor’s note: 2 DJs and a Boombox is exactly that. Dark Knight, a popular radio personality, and Moss Pit, a local mobile music DJ, play a few tunes for each other and let their thoughts flow.

Dark Knight and Moss Pit: One, two, three …

MP: The streak ends — scissors cut paper.

DK: I was robbed.

“Nobody’s Fault But My Own”

Beck

DK: He’s using real instruments. It’s nice.

MP: It’s very not Beck.

DK: No kidding. No synthesizing the voice or funky electronic noises.

MP: It’s a weird record — all folk.

DK: This is what The Doors would be doing if Morrison was still alive.

MP: Beck’s one of my favorite public figures. He’s hilarious.

DK: I’ve always liked him because he wears funky suits, says funky stuff and walks around like, “Hey, what’s going on. I really don’t care. I’m just having fun.”

MP: He was great at the MTV Awards when he showed what it would be like to have sex with a drum machine.

DK: I still don’t know about “Odelay.” Everybody was like, “This is the best album of the world.”

I listened to everything on it and some of it was good, but at the same time, there was stuff that was just as good or better out that year. Same with Radiohead last year. I never understood what all the hype was about.

MP: It’s kind of odd that all the magazines pick the same record.

DK: I get worried when that happens. Music should be where not everybody likes the same thing.

“Girl You Know It’s True”

Milli Vanilli

DK: I thought we’d go back to the age of spandex, lip syncing and hair extensions.

MP: Oh my, Milli Vanilli.

DK: This is an album no one admits they ever owned. Because you could sell it back. You could wipe all existence of it away.

You can’t even find these anymore. I’ve looked in used record stores, and they are no where to be found.

MP: That sucks. I wish I owned one. I had a cassette of it, and I think I sold it.

It’s kind of sad, though, because one of the guys ruined his life over it — turned to hardcore drugs for like five years and then died this summer.

DK: Then, of course, there were the bad jokes about his suicide, like “Did someone do it for him?”

MP: This song is awesome.

DK: Milli Vanilli’s music is good. There’s a reason they won the Grammy. I thought they shouldn’t have stripped it, they should have gave it to the guys who really sang it.

MP: Yeah, that’s what I thought way back then.

DK: It’s one of those things, how did a record company actually think they could get away with it?

I still remember the press conference when they announced it, and they were going, “Can you guys really sing?” And Rob was like, “Yeah.” Then he starts belting this song out really badly. You just felt so bad for him because he was trying too hard to prove he was legit, but he just couldn’t.

“Homebrew”

311

DK: Nothing like “Homebrew.”

MP: I’m not too impressed with this new live album.

DK: I like some of their stuff. When I first heard them, I really liked them.

MP: 311’s probably my favorite duo vocals group. Nick Hexum and S.A.’s voices are so different.

DK: That’s one of the downfalls of a lot bigger groups. If more than one guy sings, they have to have distinctly different voices, otherwise no one knows.

MP: It’s cool to think these guys used to play People’s for $100.

DK: It’s amazing what bands will play a gig for. I’ve known guys who have said, “If we can get free beer all night, we’ll play.”

MP: This is one of those live CDs where the only thing live about it is the clapping at the beginning and end.

“Jungle Love”

The Time

DK: This is one of my favorite groups of all time. I wish they would have done more stuff. Recognize it yet?

Come on, Mr. ’80s DJ.

Oh my God, am I stumping him?

MP: New Edition?

DK: The Time. They’ve only done two albums, but all of it is quality stuff. Especially when you got Jimmy Jam and Terry playing instruments.

MP: Aren’t they big producers now?

DK: Yeah, they do all Janet’s stuff and some other stuff. And Morris Day did some stuff on the side.

MP: I remember the band, but I don’t remember this song.

DK: You’re kidding me.

These guys were doing dance moves that I think every boy group that’s been out since stole. New Kids stole them. Backstreet Boys stole them.

MP: It must have been good stuff.
