Cyclone shootout features men’s, women’s teams
November 9, 1998
The men’s and women’s basketball teams had their considerable talents on display at the Cyclone Shootout, held at Hilton Coliseum 30 minutes after Nebraska had finished pummeling the ISU football team 42-7.
The Shootout began with the introductions of both teams, who were greeted with equal verve.
Then the teams competed in a three point contest. For the women, it was Stacy Frese against Megan Taylor, while the men’s contest featured Paris Corner versus Martin Rancik.
The women started out hot, with both Taylor and Frese hitting 14 shots in the allotted 45 seconds.
In the ten second shoot-off that followed, however, Frese dominated, hitting five of six shots, while Taylor struggled.
The men’s contest was not much of one at all, as Corner hit 12 to Rancik’s eight.
That set up a final between Corner and Frese, and she represented her team well by hitting an incredible 18 shots, while Corner countered with 13.
Although in past years this was followed by a dunk contest, this year Stevie Johnson was not given a chance to win that title for the third year in a row.
The women then took the floor for a 20- minute, running-clock scrimmage, and they were both entertaining and impressive.
The game pitted the starters against the reserves, and the squad showed its considerable talent and depth by keeping the game fairly close, especially through the first five minutes.
However, the starting team pulled away to come up with a 64-23 win.
One of the nation’s best backcourts showed why they are so highly touted, as Taylor scored 24 points on five of nine shooting, which included a three-of-six showing from behind the arc.
Stacy Frese kept her hot streak going by hitting six of 10 shots, including five of eight attempts from downtown. She totaled 17 points, second behind Taylor.
Also playing well for the starters were Angie Welle, who totaled eight points on four-of-six shooting, and Monica Huelman, whose 10 points included a three-pointer.
The reserve squad struggled as expected, but it did have a few highlights.
Erica Haugen hit two shots from long range, while Kelly Cizek didn’t miss a shot in route to seven points.
Desiree Francis led all rebounders with five, while Alyssa Shriver had six points.
The squads combined to shoot 49 percent from the field, including 13 of 25 from behind the arc. They also had 16 assists to go with only eight turnovers to provide a solid 2-1 ratio.
Then came the men’s game, which showed that Coach Eustachy has been focusing mainly on defense throughout the first weeks of practice.
The squads, which were divided equally, battled to a 21-20 slugfest that left fans hoping Michael Nurse and Rodney Hampton, sitting out for disciplinary reasons, are going to provide scoring punch.
The game was highlighted by an exchange with about seven minutes to play.
Stevie Johnson started the play by leaping high into the air to steal the inbound pass. He made an outlet pass to Lee Love, who threw a beautiful lob pass to Martin Rancik, who finished with a thundering throw down.
Other than that, the scrimmage was marked by squads that struggled to get off good shots and included a total of four airballs.
There were some players who did do well, however.
Marcus Fizer showed he was ready for another season with a 10-point showing, and Klay Edwards unleashed a bulkier frame and a quicker jump hook to score 10 points on four of six shooting from the field.
Both squads combined to shoot 40 percent from the floor with only eight assists, two problems which plagued ISU a year ago.
Both teams have exhibition games this week, with the women facing Shelen of Russia on Wednesday and the men debuting against a Bosnian select team on Thursday.
