Cyclones sweep another weekend

The Iowa State Hockey team proved that last week’s sweep of Life College was not a fluke by defeating Minot State twice this weekend.

On Friday night the Cyclones got on the board first when freshman Todd Dundas scored on a pass from fellow freshman Nat Little.

Both teams played solid defense as the first period ended in a 1-0 advantage for Iowa State. That all changed in the second as both teams combined for six goals.

Little gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal, but the Beavers quickly scored twice within the next minute to knot the score at two apiece.

Freshman Glenn Detulleo and Greg Jones assisted Darren Anderson on a goal that gave ISU a lead that it would not relinquish.

Detulleo then scored on a pass from Jones and Darren Anderson was assisted by Detulleo on a goal to give the Cyclones a commanding 5-2 lead heading into the final period.

“Darren has shown great leadership this season,” said Head Coach Al Murdoch, “The veterans are helping the freshman adjust well.”

The third period turned into the Darcy Anderson show.

“We just wore them down in the third period,” said Darcy, “We had a lot more stamina than the other team because we are all better conditioned.”

Darcy Anderson scored three goals in the final period to claim his first hat trick of the season. Minot State added another goal, but it was too little too late for the Beavers as Iowa State won 8-3.

Saturday night’s game provided a little more drama as Iowa State had to battle back from a deficit twice to claim an 8-5 win.

The Cyclones found themselves down 1-0 in the first period, but that all changed when Darcy and Darren Anderson each scored goals in a span of 37 seconds to give ISU the lead.

Minot State answered with a goal of its own to tie the score at 2-2 as the first period ended.

The Beavers began the second period with two goals and put Iowa State in a 4-2 hole. Coach Murdoch decided to go to sophomore goalie Nick Makris to try and stop the Beaver attack.

“We felt we needed a change of tempo so we went with Makris,” said Coach Murdoch, “Nick has been playing hot this season also.”

The Cyclones proved they could come back from a deficit in last week’s opener when they were down 3-0 and went on to win.

Saturday’s game was no exception. Darren and Darcy Anderson scored back to back goals once again to tie up the score and Detulleo put one in the net as the second period ended in a tie once again at 5-5.

The Cyclones punished Minot State in the third period both physically and on the score board. Iowa State was short handed four times but did not allow a goal as Makris turned away all eleven shots in the final period despite not feeling well.

“I started to feel a little queasy out there after I made a save,” said Makris, “After play stopped I skated towards the bench, but I spilled my guts halfway.”

Despite his illness, Makris and the rest of the Cyclones played excellent defense.

“The defense was really coming together tonight,” said Makris, “The guys did a great job of clearing the front of the net.”

Darcy Anderson scored his third goal of the game on a play where Mike Anderson sacrificed his body for the team.

“Mike played phenomenal. He’s a heavy hitter who can run over opponents,” said Darcy, “He knew he was going to get hit after the pass, and that is what championships are made of.”

Darcy Anderson added another goal to give him four on the game along with two assists. Many players can go the entire season without a hat trick, but he managed two this weekend in back to back games.

The Cyclones are composed of 54 percent freshman, but they have adjusted well in the first four games.

“This is the best recruiting class we have had in a long time,” said Darcy, “A lot of them are Division I caliber.”

“Detulleo has outstanding speed and agility and Todd Dundas is great at killing penalties,” commented Darcy.

Freshman Joe Fiebiger added a goal in the third as ISU won 8-5 and remained unbeaten for the season.

Next week the Cyclones take on North Dakota State on Friday and Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in hopes of adding to their 4-0 record.

“NDSU is great challenge every year and we’ve become big rivals,” said Darcy, “It’s great to be able to play in Hilton for such big games.”

Even though the games are at Hilton Coliseum, the tickets will still be the same price.

“We’re expecting a big crowd next weekend,” said Darcy, “We really count on the crowd to pump us up. Our fans are the sixth skater on the ice.”

Since next weekend is homecoming, Iowa State will look to come up with some huge wins, in both hockey and football.

“Hopefully the fans will carry over to the hockey game after the football team wins,” said Darcy, “It would be great to see a double win.”
