Journalism students awarded Don Jackson prize

Sara Ziegler, junior in journalism and mass communication, and Corey Moss, senior in journalism and mass communication, were both announced as recipients of the Donald Jackson prize for excellence in writing.

The awards, which are presented by the Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communication, are funded by an endowment honoring Jackson, the late historian, author and editor who graduated from the department in 1942, according to a press release.

The scholarships are worth $1,000 each.

Ziegler is the daughter of Ron and Patti Ziegler of Des Moines; Moss is the son of Roger and Cheryl Moss of Urbandale.

Ziegler has worked at the Iowa State Daily as a reporter, columnist, copy editor, editorial board member and opinion editor. She is currently the paper’s managing editor.

Ziegler has contributed to U. Magazine, and one of her columns will soon be published in a college textbook.

This is the third year Moss has been the editor of the Arts & Entertainment section for the Daily. He is a contributor for VIBE and U. Magazine.

He also served as managing editor for the Daily in the summer of 1997 and the spring of 1998.

He was a finalist in the College Music Journalism Awards competition and was an American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) intern at VIBE magazine.

The pair will be presented their awards during a reception for alumni and friends of the department following the Homecoming football game.
