Event on the green helps scholars

The Iowa State Alumni Golf Tournament will be held at Veenker Memorial Golf Course on Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. The event is being held in conjunction with ISU’s Homecoming celebration.

“The Alumni Golf Tournament is not explicitly open to alumni,” said Justin Chesnut, alumni events coordinator and junior in agricultural system technologies. “Any one [person] or group of four can participate in this golfing event.”

The event on the green costs $30 per person and $120 for a team of four. Much of the proceeds will go towards the 1998 ISU Homecoming Scholarship.

Students who apply for the scholarship must have the following qualifications: a 3.0 grade point average, 60 credits (junior status), have attended ISU for the past two years and have a legacy of an ISU alumnus or first generation college student.

Some of the proceeds also will go to the omelet breakfast, to be held before the tournament from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and also for green fees and carts to drive around the 18-hole golf course, located on Stange Road.

“This is one of the last times to go golfing,” Chestnut said. “We, the Homecoming Committee, wish the alumni and others a really good time.”

“Golf is a challenge; it is the ultimate individual sport,” said Don Denner, ISU alumnus who graduated in financial planning in 1991.

“I am looking forward to playing golf with my alumni friends, who I played rugby with while attending Iowa State,” Denner said.

The Alumni Golf Tournament can manage 36 teams or 1,144 people.

Golfers can sign up by calling the Student Alumni Association at 294-0198 or the Homecoming central committee at 294-8488.

“People may also show up at Veenker Golf course, Oct. 11, and we, the Homecoming staff, can pair up singles. But we would prefer if people would sign up ahead of time, in order to organize the game,” Chesnut said. “But everyone is welcome. We are going to have a good time.”
