Tae Kwon Do club continues success

The ISU Tae kwon do Club continued its run of success, with a strong performances in its home tournament and the World University Game USA team tryouts.

The Cyclones dominated the Iowa State Tae kwon do Championship, reporting eight first-place, seven second-place and four third-place finishes.

Jen Walker (Black Recommend) and Jeff Rothermel (Brown) both received first places for forms and sparring in their divisions.

Other first place winners for ISU included Chris Thompson (Black) and Sandra Deihl (Black) in forms and Jared Gullikson (Black) and Miranda Hinrichs (Black) in sparring.

Thompson and Deihl also placed in sparring, with Thompson earning a second place finish and Deihl finishing third in their respective divisions.

Other second place finishers included Carolyn Gauff (Blue) in forms, Kari Kreger (Black) and Matt Verheage (Black) in forms and sparring, Bonnie Weigand (Black) in sparring and Emeka Anyanwy (Blue) in sparring.

Anyanwy also placed third in forms. The other third place finishers were Irene Faas (Black) and Lucas Marpe (Black), both in sparring.

The Cyclones also had success at the recently concluded Team USA tryouts for the World University Games, to be held in Manzanillo, Mexico Nov 23-28.

Bonnie Harrison and Miranda Hinrichs, both of whom placed first at the national championships, tried out and made the team.

They will both compete on Team USA at the Games.

Master Yong Chin Pak, coach of Iowa State and the president of the National Collegiate Tae kwon do Association, said through a press release that he is “very proud of the accomplishments of Iowa State University athletes.”
