Newcomer DMX covers Phil Collins, Goldfinger covers a ‘cheesy ’70s band’

Moss Pit & Dark Knight

Editor’s note: 2 DJs and a Boombox is exactly that. Dark Knight, a popular radio personality, and Moss Pit, a local mobile music DJ, play a few tunes for each other and let their thoughts flow.

Dark Knight and Moss Pit: One, two, three …

DK: Ahh yes! Three weeks in a row, baby.

“I Just Can’t Take It Any More”

R.T.

DK: This is an example of what not to do. After listening to this, you’ll know why “you just can’t take it any more.” This is just really bad. Like bad Spanish karaoke or something.

MP: And they sent this to you to be on the radio?

DK: Yes.

MP: This is really bad.

DK: You hear this, and you picture some hack singer, some whiny cry-baby guy, sitting there going “I want you next to me.”

MP: It almost sounds like “Dream Weaver.”

DK: Although, Gary Glitter could actually sing.

MP: You know who this probably is? Gerado. He’s having a comeback under a different name.

DK: That’s the funny thing. It’s so bad I think the guys know it, so he just uses his initials. He won’t use his full name; he knows it’s that crappy.

“I’m not here.” Yeah, I’m not here anymore either. Click.

“Last Stop: This Town”

Eels

MP: I don’t know if you remember Eels. They did “Novocain For Your Soul.” This is their new single. It’s a fun little song.

DK: Eels stealing from the Monkees.

MP: I love this guy’s voice.

DK: It’s almost like “Shiny Time Station” or something on “Sesame Street.” I don’t know why, but the melody of this song makes me think of “Wheels on the bus go round and round.”

Whoa, that was abrupt.

MP: I know you like those abrupt changes.

DK: It’s a nice mood change. He’s goes from a melody to “Raah, raah, raah, I’m gonna kill your mother!”

MP: “I can’t take it anymore.”

DK: “I want you next to me.” Yeah, you could almost sing that to this song.

MP: I like that low bass line there. I don’t know who sings it.

DK: Probably the bass player. I’ve come to find that no matter what kind of music it is, the guy with the deep voice is always the bass player.

Or he’s just there to provide a deep voice. Kind of like the Bosstones, how they have a guy who just dances.

MP: That’s when you know a band is cool, when they have a guy who just dances.

“I Love You More Today Than Yesterday”

Goldfinger

DK: This is from Adam Sandler’s new “The Waterboy” soundtrack. It is actually a remake of the old cheesy ’70s love song, believe it or not.

MP: Who did the original?

DK: I don’t remember.

MP: Some cheesy ’70s band.

DK: This has got the same lyrics and same music, but totally different feel. This is an example of a good cover song.

MP: I like it. It doesn’t sound like Goldfinger. The guy’s singing like two octaves higher. Last time I saw Goldfinger in concert, they did a cover of “Tubthumping.” It was awesome.

DK: I don’t know what gave Adam Sandler the idea to play a waterboy.

MP: It looks funny though.

DK: The sound he makes before he gets all upset, isn’t that the same sound Jim Carrey did in “Dumb and Dumber” as the most annoying sound in the world.

MP: It’s very similar.

“I Can Feel It”

DMX

MP: That was an example of a good cover, this is an example of a bad cover.

DK: You’re kidding me, all I know is Kari Lee would kill this guy. She’s a big Phil Collins/Genesis fan. Anyone who butchers that stuff, she just wants to hurt.

MP: It’s just a bad song to cover.

DK: There’s some songs that just shouldn’t be redone.

MP: I don’t know if it’s really a cover or just a sample.

DK: Well, he uses the hook.

MP: Do you play any DMX?

DK: No.

MP: I actually like his other stuff. “Get at me dog/Where my dog’s at.”

DK: I’ve heard some songs he appears on, and they’re decent.

MP: Guest appearances are getting out of hand in the rap industry.

DK: It’s always, “Mase featuring … , Puffy featuring … “

MP: Right now, Big Punisher’s on 400 different CDs.

DK: Why don’t they all just do one big album, 283 tracks?

MP: “We Are the World 2.”
