Smith ‘Lives’ on
October 15, 1998
Whether or not they ask for it, Christian recording artists are often put on a pedestal by their fans. As soon as they make it into the limelight, it is assumed that they have attained all there is to attain in their walk with the Lord and thus are the perfect example to follow.
Grammy award-winning, platinum record-selling, contemporary Christian artist Michael W. Smith has gradually become greatly respected in Christian households all over America.
But he knows he’s not perfect.
Though Smith acknowledges that as a human on earth it’s impossible to be absolutely perfect, his new album, “Live the Life,” rallies for Christians to try to be the best possible example of the One they claim to represent.
“The inspiration for writing ‘Live the Life’ was a quote from St. Francis of Assisi,” Smith said in a press release. “He said, ‘Preach the Gospel to all the world and if necessary, use words.’ The world is tired of hearing Christians doing so much talking. They want to see us living what we say we believe.”
In keeping with Smith’s goal to encourage others, many of the songs on the album, such as “Don’t Give Up” and “Let Me Show You the Way,” provide words of inspiration and hope.
Another important part of learning how to “live the life” is learning how to deal with disappointment and loss. Last year Smith’s friend and label mate, Rich Mullins, died in a tragic car accident. “A Song for Rich,” an Irish-based tribute to Mullins, describes the late songwriter as the great poet he was.
“Rich was a good friend, and I miss him a lot,” Smith said. “His songs have had a huge impact on me, and this song really reminds me of him.”
Smith will perform these songs along with his many classics Saturday at Hilton Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. Wilshire and Chris Rice will open.
Tickets are still available for $19.50 and $22.50.
