Jubilant destruction

Brad Bingham

I think it is becoming very clear that a fraction of the ISU student body that attends football games equates jubilation with destruction.

How else could you explain the fact that an ISU victory over Ball State would prompt the tearing down of goal posts?

I’m not saying that form of celebration does not have its place.

But it is very clear that this group of fans does not understand where and when it is appropriate.

When ISU stunned Nebraska in 1992, the posts came down.

If ISU would have beaten Iowa at home two weeks ago, the posts would have come down.

But every time ISU wins a football came over the Ball States and Ohio Universities of the world, the fans need to scream, yell and celebrate all the way home but keep lake Laverne clear of the yellow uprights.

Gene Smith and Dan McCarney have started down the long road to turn this football program into a winning organization.

The fans now have to follow suit and become part of that change.

That change includes expecting that ISU will prevail over the mediocrity of the world and not raising their amount of euphoria to peak levels when the team accomplishes that task.
