Volleyball team falls to Drake
September 24, 1998
The Cyclone volleyball team experienced yet another setback on Tuesday, falling in four games to intrastate rival, Drake.
The Bulldogs took the first two games, both by scores of 15-9, dropped the third game 8-15, and came back to win the match in the fourth with a score of 15-11.
Drake wasn’t led by any player in particular, surging past the Cyclones on a textbook team effort. Four Bulldogs ended the match with double-figure kills and only one player failed to notch at least a single successful attack.
Kim Bahr ended the match with 15 kills, Stacie Kocourek had 12, Peggy Bakalyar had 11 and Jennifer Sieck finished with 10.
The Bulldogs hit .221 from the floor for the match and .291 during their three wins.
The Cyclones, who fall to 2-10, were again led by Melissa Duffield, who continues to impress as a redshirt freshman. Duffield ended the match with 13 kills, 13 digs, a pair of blocks and a service ace.
The double-digit kill and dig totals give Melissa her second consecutive double-double performance.
Other Iowa State highlights include Lindsay Robinson’s career-high 19 digs, a 10-kill performance by Stacy Nicks and 36 assists by Sarah Pieper.
The Cyclones will aim for their third season victory on Friday in Lincoln against conference foe, Nebraska, but the task will not be an easy one.
The Cornhuskers are currently ranked third in the nation with a perfect 9-0 record. In fact, Nebraska has only lost one of 28 games so far this year.
Their last opponent, the ninth-ranked Florida Gators, managed only 12 points against the Huskers and were shut out in their final game.
Nancy Meendering and Fiona Nepo lead the Nebraska onslaught with a .359 hitting percentage and 12.29 assist per game average, respectively.
Since they began playing Nebraska in 1977, the Cyclones have never come away with a victory, falling in 51 consecutive matches.
