Words of Winston

Daniel M. Beaver-Seitz

Winston Churchill once remarked that “most people’s idea of free speech is that they are allowed to say whatever they want and no one else is allowed to disagree.”

Mr. Calek appears to have taken this remark to heart, if his column this week (9-1, Get Your Own Popular Opinion) is a defense of his opinion of Lilith Fair.

Churchill understood that the primary purpose of freedom of speech is the fostering of public discourse on issues.

Discourse can only occur if one is able to state an opinion while others are allowed to voice their opposition to that opinion.

Mr. Calek has every right to his opinion, but he must not meet any disagreement with the cry of censorship, or he is as guilty of this sin as those he accuses.
