Bringing in the peeves

Rudy Van Mersbergen

As I read Ben Godar’s article “God’s Greatest Hits — now in record stores,” it became clear to me that Mr. Godar has come away with several false impressions.

One of which is that the Gideons, and all people sharing their faith, are doing it for themselves.

Those men were not giving out Bibles to help themselves.

They did it because they care about the people who are on this campus.

They were not “peddling their faith” to see who could get the highest number of converts.

If talking to people is done in the right mind-set, numbers are irrelevant.

I do not recall Bibles being forced on those walking through campus; if they had taken one and read it, it would have been to their own advantage.

With the Bible, people have the opportunity to read a lot of passages that “might help him or her along,” much more than the fallible “Book of Ben.”

The work we do while we are here is nothing compared to what happens after we are gone. What is eternity compared to seventy years?

That is why the Gideons were standing on the corners with their boxes of Bibles — because they are concerned about you.
