New ownership has brought some changes to Home Team Pizza.

The pizza establishment now offers guaranteed delivery in 30 minutes to campus locations and dorms from the time the order is placed to the time it arrives at the door. The food is free if does not make it on time.

“We aren’t forcing the drivers to speed, we are pressuring our workers in the store to work faster,” said Tom Baldwin, owner of Home Team Pizza, 2426 Lincoln Way.

For safety reasons, this guarantee is only for residence halls and greek houses, Baldwin said.

Steve Huebner, owner of Domino’s Pizza, 118 Hayward Ave., said Domino’s originated the 30-minute delivery, and it usually resulted in corners being cut within the store.

“It really is a safety issue,” Huebner said. “When you get drivers out there trying to make a delivery in 30 minutes, especially on campus, it is difficult to keep the guarantee.”

Huebner also said their deliveries usually run from 30 to 40 minutes without a guarantee.

However, Baldwin said he is not worried about Home Team being able to keep the 30-minute delivery guarantee.

“We aren’t penalizing our drivers for having to give a pizza away,” Baldwin said. “We usually give away five to 10 pizzas a night. On busy nights we can give away up to 20.”

Baldwin also said the delivery guarantee will not force them to cut corners in the restaurant.

“Our dough, sauce and many of our toppings are prepared by hand daily in the store. Most of our competitors have food shipped in weekly,” he said.

He also said the fresh ingredients account for “better tasting pizza.”

Besides the 30-minute delivery, Home Team Pizza has seen other changes, as well.

The dining area has been remodeled and air conditioning has been installed to attract more of a lunchtime crowd.

Beginning this week, the store also will begin to run daily specials.

“We don’t run coupons in the papers anymore because our regular prices are already 25 to 40 percent lower than our competitors,” Baldwin said.

He said this makes their daily specials even more “incredible.”

Home Team Pizza is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to midnight.
