The body politic
September 21, 1998
Dustin, rest assured that the LGBTA Alliance has always been very careful about how it steps into the political realm. The Alliance does not accept funding from any campaign or other political source. All of the Alliance’s budget comes from its members, fundraising activities, the GSB and private donations. None of its money is ever used to endorse campaigns or political parties.
In strict compliance with GSB funding policy, the Alliance does educate its members on political issues that effect the LGBT community, such as the Defense of Marriage Act, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy in the military. But the Alliance does not endorse any politician or political party; we simply inform our members of current issues when they arise.
From the GSB funding bylaws —”Section 11.7.2.1.2: [The organization must be:] not contributing financial or material support to or accepting financial or material support from any political party or campaign, or endorsing a political party or candidacy of any person for any elected office. GSB funds will not be used to fund specific political activities that further political education of the student body.
Priority will be given to programs which present diverse points of view.”
