To all of the aspiring musicians and writers out there, Boheme is providing 20-minute time slots for you to express your creativity.

An open mic for prose and poetry begins at 9 p.m. on Sundays. Every Monday is reserved for a music open mic starting at 9 p.m., Boheme’s Web site reported. Potential participants can sign up for the weekly events at 2900 West St.

The Bone People, one of Ames’ most distinguished band is scheduled to play a show this weekend at Boheme.

“Peter Manesis’ fingers fly across the guitar like a hummingbird in heat,” the band’s Web site reported. His talent extends beyond acoustic guitar to the far reaches of a multitude of stringed instruments including the Greek bouzouki, mandolin and bass guitar.

Manesis is joined by percussionist Anthony Stevens and the very poetic vocalist Debra Marquart.

The trio has released two CDs, “Orange Parade” and “A Regular Dervish.” But despite their success, members of The Bone People are far from being “sell-outs.”

The band’s shows are reasonably priced and always have an intimate and friendly setting. The Bone People has even been known to play free concerts at the Ames Public Library.

This Saturday at 9 p.m. they will give you a great show for under $5 at Boheme.

Through the grapevine

Digital Underground, creators of the popular ’80s “Humpty Dance,” just signed a contract to play two shows at the M-Shop in November. The rap legends are touring in support of its new release, “Who Got The Gravy,” which features appearances by The Big Punisher, KRS-One and Biz Markie.

Another ’80s rap phenomenon, Run DMC, will be coming to Des Moines’ Supertoad in October. The band is currently featured in a Gap commercial and is one of many bands to endorse the clothing store this year. Others included Luscious Jackson and The Crystal Method.

When Local H plays People’s Bar and Grill on Oct. 15, the power duo will not be a duo at all. The Zion, Ill. band has enlisted former Triple Fast Action frontman Wes Kidd to play guitar on its current tour.

Local H frontman Scott Lucas is a longtime friend of Kidd’s and played guitar with Triple Fast Action on its final tour, which came through the M-Shop last winter. Lucas will still play bass and lead guitar with his signature custom rig, as Kidd will add rhythm guitar support to the band’s new material.

Kidd will perform with the group tonight on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.”

In other Triple Fast Action news, Kidd is also playing in a side project with members of Fig Dish and Material Issue, Kevin Tihista is playing and recording with Louise Post in the new incarnation of Veruca Salt, and Brian St. Clair is now the road manager for Liz Phair.

Phair is expected to appear on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Sept. 30, the Matador Records Web site reported.

Green Day is planning on creating a B-movie horror film, in which its members will star, Rocktropolis reported.

“They are currently collaborating with different writers to develop a story idea and put a script together,” Green Day’s publicist, Amanda Cagan, said.

However, there is no title, director, movie production company or release date set. But if the movie project ever does get off of the ground, there is a chance that No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani might be a part of the flick.

“All we can say is that she was approached by the band to be a part of the movie; other than that we have no other information,” Cagan said.
