Funk soul brothers

Moss Pit & Dark Knight

Editor’s note: 2 DJs and a Boombox is exactly that. Dark Knight, a popular radio personality, and Moss Pit, a local mobile music DJ, play each other a few tunes and let their thoughts flow.

Dark Knight and Moss Pit: One, two, three …

MP: Rock breaks scissors — I got you this time.

“The Knock (Drums of Death Part Two)”

UNKLE

MP: This is a new duo with DJ Shadow and James Lavelle. They’ve got a song on here with Thom Yorke from Radiohead and one with Richard Ashcroft from the Verve. This one’s with Mike D from the Beastie Boys.

DK: Sounds like it’s coming out of a boombox that’s over modulated.

MP: Its the same rap from “Intergalactic.”

DK: I was going to say that sounds familiar. I wonder what inspired Mike D to get with this guy.

MP: Mike D is my favorite Beastie.

DK: Uncle spelled UNKLE. Can’t people spells things normally these days?

MP: Did you see the MTV Awards performance?

DK: Yes, I did.

MP: What was your favorite performance?

DK: We don’t play them, but I like them — Hole.

I always hate it when they put that sound in songs, because you think your CD is skipping. Dammit.

MP: There’s a lot of change ups in this song.

DK: That’s what you gotta do. Mix it up, baby.

“Fall From Grace”

Tina and the B-Sides

DK: “Fall From Grace,” which I’ve done on many occasions, with many different police organizations in the country. Thankfully, not here yet.

MP: I’ve always loved her voice.

DK: She never sounds like she looks.

MP: She looks kind of like K.D. Lang — but good-looking.

DK: A good-looking K.D. Lang. Is there such a thing? This is something we’re going to start testing.

MP: Really?

DK: I like to look at bands like this who are starting to put out stuff that we can play that come to Ames.

MP: That would be cool if more people knew the songs by bands that play in town.

DK: The only way groups like this are going to move from playing venues like People’s to Stephens is to get guys like me to start playing their music. If you look at Barenaked Ladies — if they keep going like this, they’ll be able to fill Hilton. But a year ago, they would have struggled to pack Stephens.

MP: I’m just amazingly burnt out on women … singers right now.

DK: You and me both.

“On The Dark Side”

John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band

MP: This is old school; it’s from one of my favorite movies of all time — “Eddie and the Cruisers.”

DK: Oh yeah. Are we going to “The Dark Side”? Beaver Brown Band baby!

MP: I get goose-bumps every time that piano part starts.

DK: This is just a good song.

MP: I always thought it was Bob Seger when I was kid.

DK: You wanna know what’s great about this movie? Tom Berenger playing keyboards and singing. That’s the funniest thing about this movie.

Actually, when I first heard this song, I said, “I didn’t know Springsteen had new stuff out.”

MP: You run across so many people who have never even heard of this movie.

DK: Once you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget it.

MP: The first couple times I saw it, the ending really freaked me out.

DK: Then they had to ruin it five years later with a sequel.

MP: With all the same songs, just live versions.

DK: It was the only way to revive The Beaver.

“The Rockafeller Skank”

Fatboy Slim

DK: This one came off that “Amp 2” from MTV.

CM: I went to the “Amp 2” CD-release party this summer. Fatboy Slim was there, and Propellerheads and Jungle Brothers. It was awesome. Fatboy Slim opened with a remix of “Intergalactic” and then went right into this. During the middle he put in a bunch of old ’50’s surf songs.

DK: That’s what I would like to see with electronica stuff.

CM: There’s some good stuff in this tune.

DK: I actually tested this, and out of the 10 people who called, four guys loved it, and one guy and five girls hated it.

CM: I love this song.

DK: It’s called “Rockafeller Skank,” but all you hear the whole song is “funk soul brother.” This one girl calls up and says that “funk soul brother” song is just nasty.

When I was talking about it on the air, I said I know a “Rochester Skank” but not a “Rockafeller Skank.”

MP: Yeah, she worked at Burger King.

DK: Oh, don’t go there.
