Women’s golf off to good start with sixth-place showing
September 16, 1998
The ISU Women’s golf team played well in the Nebraska Chip-N-Club Invitational. The team finished in sixth place in a strong field comprised of 15 teams.
The Cyclones were paced by Cathy Ennis, who fired a three round score of 227 (79-75-73). She ended up in a tie for 11th place in the tourney.
Sophomore Megan O’Dea ended with a 54 hole score of 234 (77-80-77), which was good enough for a tie for 32nd place.
After shooting an opening round of 83, sophomore Noel Jacobusse bounced back strong with scores of 75 and 77 to finish with a 235.
Sophomore Heather Elenbaas started out on fire with a 75 before finishing with scores of 83 and 79 to end up with a 237.
Glynnis McMath closed out the Cyclone squad with rounds of 77, 82 and 81 for a total of 240.
Coach Julie Manning seemed very pleased with the team’s performance.
“I really feel like we have a young group that went out there and played well. We have a really good group of sophomores, and we feel that our future is very bright,” Manning said.
Manning also talked about some of the individuals who make up the squad.
“We feel that Cathy (Ennis) and Noel (Jacobusse) are the top two players on the team,” Manning said.
“Sometimes that’s a heavy burden for players who are so young, and when they struggle, it’s important for the other girls to step up, and this week they did that,” she said.
Another important aspect of the team this year is the group of people who don’t actually get to travel.
“We have several players who stay here at home who really do a great job of putting pressure on the players. They are as big a part of the team as anyone else.”
Coach Manning, who is in her 14th year as head coach of the team, thinks the team has everything in good perspective for the upcoming year.
“I think the girls are looking this year to finish in the top half of the conference,” Manning said, “which I think is a realistic goal.
“We are really looking to when these girls are seniors, which is also the year that we host the Big 12 Championships.”
The Cyclones now move on to the Colorado Invitational, which will be held next Monday and Tuesday.
