ISU cheer squad tries to raise donating spirit

The Iowa State cheer squad is learning the price of success — $15,000. That is the grand total the squad must raise to cover expenses for its upcoming trip to the National Cheerleading Association Nationals competition.

The ISU Athletic Department, which provides funds for athletic teams, is not financing the squad’s trip. The cheer squad plans to earn the money it needs through fundraisers.

“It’s frustrating because we’re as dedicated and determined as any other team,” said Angela Bartley, a member of the cheer squad and junior in journalism and mass communication. “I’m assuming if the football team made it to the Orange Bowl, they wouldn’t have to pay for it.”

Mary Zeiglar, director of marketing of the ISU Athletic Department, said the squad does receive support from the department.

“They have a budget which helps supply them with uniforms and helps with travel,” Zeiglar said.

Some of the squad members disagree about the level of support.

“They do give us money, but they expect a percentage back,” said Kari Froehlich, cheer squad member and junior in marketing.

In addition to the funds for Nationals, the cheer squad also is required to raise $5,000 for the Athletic Department itself.

“Both the pom squad and the cheer squad raise money for the Athletic Department, which is true of other sports,” Zeiglar said.

The cheer squad plans to raise money by selling calendars featuring the ISU spirit squad. The group also makes personal appearances at area high schools.

This year marks the first time since 1992 the ISU cheer squad has qualified for Nationals. The squad will travel to Daytona, Fla. in April to compete in the Nationals if they are able to raise the necessary funds.

“We’re just stuck,” Bartley said. “We’re all really positive because it’s an amazing opportunity. It’s just too bad we have to pay to represent Iowa State.”
