Alpha Tau Omega members prepare for next millennium
September 10, 1998
Members and alumni of Alpha Tau Omega, 2122 Lincoln Way, are busy “setting up for the 21st century” by hosting their “90th Anniversary Celebration/21st Century Campaign.”
The celebration activities will feature a golf tournament, barbecue and banquet, all to be held this weekend.
“We’re expecting about 200 people,” said Trevor Bleedom, junior in English and an active member of ATO. All house members and alumni are invited to join the fun, he said.
ATO has received most of its pledges from the alumni of 1950 and a few individuals who have pledged nearly $300,000 of the $500,000 that ATO has been promised, said Steve Golumbeck, president of ATO and senior in construction engineering.
“The money will be going into three separate accounts, and ATO will be using the interest for improvements for the house and scholarships,” Golumbeck said. He also said the house will get three new computers, and improvements, such as repainting and carpeting, will be made to the its structure.
Golumbeck said the two $1,500 Verlene Vaughn Weber Scholarships will be given out to active ATO members based on financial need.
As plans settle into place, ATO members and alumni are looking forward to this year’s celebration.
The activities will begin Friday at 11 a.m., with the golf tournament held at Veenker Memorial Golf Course on Stange Road. About 36 golfers are registered to play in the tournament.
On Saturday, there will be a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. held at the ATO house.
And to finish off the weekend, ATO will be hosting a banquet beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
