Panchero’s celebrates heritage month

For Iowa State students who think they can eat a lot of burritos, Panchero’s Authentic Mexican Food, in conjunction with the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, is challenging them with the “El Gordo.”

The burrito eating contest, featuring the El Gordo, will be held Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Panchero’s, 109 Welch Ave.

“It is a big burrito with meat, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, beans, etc.,” said Luzeano Esdreda, Panchero’s employee.

The burrito weighs roughly two pounds, he said.

The contest is in its second year in Ames, but it began a few years ago at the Panchero’s restaurant in Iowa City.

Roy Salcedo, event organizer, said he hopes the event is well-received.

“We want to make it a public celebration, not just confined to the university and its residents,” Salcedo said.

Radio station 105.1 KCCQ also is joining in the effort.

“KCCQ is offering free entries into the contest,” he said. “It is another way to promote Hispanic Heritage Month.”

The contest is being sponsored by Panchero’s and Hispanic Heritage Month. Entry is free to all who wish to participate. The person who eats the most El Gordos will receive a trophy and a T-shirt.

“This is a good way to kick off our celebration,” Salcedo said.

Hispanic Heritage month will run through Oct. 29. Upcoming events include:
