As Jacques Cousteau explored the oceans and braved the dangers of the deep, millions watched in awe. Luckily the adventures did not end with his death on June 25, 1997. His son, Jean-Michel Cousteau, has continued his work and has added his own twist.

In his multimedia lecture titled “Designing Our Future,” Cousteau will speak on the effects of society on our environment. His focus will be on the world’s oceans.

The lecture will be Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. It is free and open to the public.

Jay Guyer, president of the SCUBA Club at ISU, said he is looking forward to Cousteau’s lecture.

“Jean-Michel Cousteau, his brother and their father, Jacques Cousteau, are considered the first underwater family,” he said. “They have done numerous expeditions all over the world, studying underwater ecosystems.”

According to a biography, before the death of his father, Cousteau and his father produced films and television programs.

As part of the award-winning program “Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau,” he has continued his work as a producer and is currently working on the television series “Cousteau’s Rediscovery of the World.”

While Cousteau worked with his father exploring the oceans, he was able to make time to attend college and graduated from the Paris School of Architecture.

“People are interested in his father’s work, and [Jean-Michel] Cousteau’s work brings something new,” said Pat Miller, director of the Lectures Programs. “He is so well known for his environmental work.”

According to a lectures biography, Cousteau is the president of the Living Design Corporation. His corporation works on promoting environmentally appropriate design.

Through the Living Design Corporation, Cousteau headed a team who transformed a section of the ocean liner Queen Mary into the Living Sea Museum in California.

In addition to this credit, Cousteau writes for Earth Matters and works with Project Ocean Search. This project provides people with the opportunity to study underwater ecosystems.

Cousteau’s lecture is sponsored by the SCUBA club, the Student Environmental Council, the colleges of Design, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, the departments of biology, forestry, botany and sociology, and the Committee on Lectures.
