Tripping the live fantastic
September 27, 1998
Tripping Daisy’s show at The M-Shop Thursday night may not have “Hit Like The Atom Bomb,” like the group’s new record claims, but it could easily be described as the bomb.
Daisy delivered over 90 minutes of poppy punk-rock, induced by the band’s thicker, more sound-effects-ridden sound.
Frontman Tim DeLaughter took advantage of the club setting and composed the kind of stage presence that makes you want step up on stage and give him a giant bear hug.
His voice was amazing too, as he belted out new and old material with the same intimate emotion usually achieved by laying in a dark room with “Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb” or “I Am an Elastic Firecracker” blaring from your speakers.
Video projectors showing shop-class-style documentaries provided the perfect backdrop for new multi-layered material like “Bandaids For Hire” and “Our Drive To the Sun.”
A dream-sequence-like rendition of the current single, “Sonic Bloom,” highlighted the first part of the show, as Daisy dipped into older stuff for round two.
“I Got a Girl,” the band’s breakthrough hit, was extended and extorted to perfection and was followed by the mosh-pit-in-the-making “Piranha,” which was introduced by DeLaughter asking, “Are you ready for this?”
Drummer Ben Curtis, the latest addition to the group, and longtime bassist Mark Pirro provided a solid pace for guitarists Wes Berggren, Philip Karnats and DeLaughter to strut their newfangled stuff.
Each of the Daisies contributed vocally, which brought even more layers to the Tripping spectacle.
An encore tranquilized primarily by the amazing “Firecracker” tune “Rocketpop” was unmatched by anything that came before it.
The diversity in that song alone shows why Tripping Daisy has survived an alternative rock world whose slogan has become “Here Today, Gone Today.”
DeLaughter proceeded into a masterful version of “Glory, glory alleluia/Teacher hit me with a ruler” to close out the evening.
Don’t you just want to hug him?
