Drovers plan return to Maintenance Shop

The Chicago-based The Drovers announced an Oct. 10 return to The M-Shop this week, but it’s never too early to mark your calendars for the band’s always-memorable fall performance.

The Drovers Web site reports the band has a sound defined from “the traditions of jazz, African and Middle Eastern music, mountain music, American folk, British invasion and the avant-garde.”

A unique sound has already earned the band “fifteen seconds of fame,” and then some.

Way back when the band consisted of four members instead of five, it was cast in the movie “Blink.” In 1993, the foursome performed at the Golden Globe Awards post-ceremony reception, but that wasn’t one of the group’s fondest musical endeavors.

The Drovers’ bio reports “Old Hollywood types protested that the music was ‘too loud,’ and that we were ruining their party.” An upset band member took action and “flung his guitar to the floor and stormed off stage.”

Don’t expect this sort of mayhem at the October show, but be prepared for a blockbuster evening.

Upcoming Releases

A Mercury press release recently announced that Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach will dish out a new album, yet to be titled, later this month.

In case you are unfamiliar with Bacharach, he’s the composer of “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” as well as many other Grammy and Academy Award winning classics.

Let’s talk about sex, baby. On Oct. 20 you’ll be able to hear this memorable line along with the other “Greatest Hits” from Salt-N-Pepa.

Also on Oct. 20, Delfi records will release “Delphonic Sounds Today!,” a compilation album centered on the ’60s.

That record will be subtitled the “Del-fi Does Del-fi” album and will feature a slew of mostly new bands.

“La Bamba” and “Hippy, Hippy Shake” are a couple of the songs that will appear on the compilation.

Flying Nun has just released a tribute album called “God Save the Clean” that includes, among others, Pavement, Guided By Voices and Barbara Manning, reported the Matador news Web site.

“The album reflects the essence of the Clean’s do-your-thing attitude as well as the music they produced,” the Web site said.
