Former Iowa State men’s basketball star player and coach Fred Hoiberg might not be out of a job for long.

After being fired by the Chicago Bulls in December, Hoiberg has been linked to multiple job openings within the NBA and college basketball.

The latest job is that of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who fired coach and team president Tom Thibodeau Sunday afternoon. Hoiberg replaced Thibodeau as the Bulls head coach in 2015.

Theory is that Hoiberg was closing in on the UCLA job and Taylor knew he had to move now to get him. Make Ryan Saunders the associate head coach and everyone gets what they want.

Hoiberg has a career coaching record of 115-155 in the NBA. He made the playoffs one time with the Bulls, winning two games in the first round before being knocked out by the Boston Celtics in 2017.

Hoiberg has ties to the Timberwolves and owner Glen Taylor. Hoiberg played for the Timberwolves from 2003-05.

He led the NBA in 3-point percentage in 2004-05 as a member of the Timberwolves and was a part of Minnesota’s 2003-04 team that won 58 games and made the Western Conference Finals, both of which are the best marks in franchise history.

Ryan Saunders, son of former Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders, has been named the interim coach for Minnesota.
