Families ‘Getting Jiggy with Chemistry’

While some students take their parents to next weekend’s Iowa State/Texas Tech football game, other students will be working on their chemistry.

The students won’t be doing homework — they will be attending Thomas Greenbowe’s lecture titled “Getting Jiggy with Chemistry.”

The lecture is aimed at ISU students and their parents and siblings wanting to get a taste of college life.

“[We] wanted to provide an alternative activity for families to attend who didn’t want to go to the game, and we came up with ‘Send your Family to Class,'” said Dave Critchlow, adviser of the Student Alumni Association.

“The committee thought that Dr. Greenbowe’s lecture … would [provide] an exciting interactive session,” he said.

Greenbowe, associate professor of chemistry, said the lecture will not be purely entertainment.

Critchlow said Greenbowe will give the audience a taste of a typical Chemistry 177 lecture.

“What we really hope to accomplish is an opportunity for families to experience a little of what their child, brother or sister experiences at Iowa State,” Critchlow said. “We also want families to know that there is a lot of chemistry in their daily lives.”

However, Greenbowe said the presentation will not be a lecture only.

“I’m planning to use multimedia, group learning [and] audience participation, [and then I’m going to] ask the audience to predict what will happen,” Greenbowe said.

“Several members of the audience will experience being part of an electrochemical salt bridge,” he said. “That may cause them to feel jiggy.”

The class will be held Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 1602 of Gilman Hall.
