Professor’s husband arrested after voucher fraud

An Iowa State education professor’s husband was arrested Thursday night by Department of Public Safety officers on charges of using falsified university vouchers to obtain thousands of dollars in merchandise from Ames area businesses, according to an article in Friday’s The Des Moines Register.

Christopher Donaldson, 40, also is suspected of using the vouchers to obtain more than $12,000 worth of computer equipment at CompUSA in Clive.

Donaldson is listed as a graduate student in education at ISU, and he is married to Karen Donaldson, an expert on multicultural education, according to The Register.

DPS arrested Donaldson after questioning him Thursday night.

Officers searched Donaldson’s home Wednesday and recovered some of the merchandise. Also found was a letter, supposedly written by an ISU purchasing agent, authorizing Donaldson to pick up merchandise with organization vouchers. Investigators believe the letter was a forgery.

Authentic vouchers are sold at student bookstores and are used by campus clubs to buy supplies and equipment for activities.

According to The Register, Donaldson has been using the vouchers since April.
