All-ages dance club opens on Welch
August 25, 1998
Club owner Andrew White may not be serving alcohol at his new all-ages bar in Ames, but he is trying his best to make it look like he is.
“I just put in a frozen drinks machine to serve virgin daiquiris, and I have non-alcoholic draft beer on tap,” White said Monday.
The Scene, Welch Avenue’s first non-alcoholic nightclub, opened Wednesday night in the former Cue-Club location at 124 Welch Ave.
“A large population of ISU is under 21, and I felt that they needed something fun to do in Ames,” White said.
White, who co-owns and operates a sports bar in Denver with Larry Walker of the Colorado Rockies, has had his eye on Ames and felt it needed a club of this nature.
The Scene will host a Time Capsule night on Wednesdays that will showcase a wide variety of ’80s music.
“We’ll be playing everything from Madonna to Flock of Seagulls,” White said. “And all the ’80s dance music that you don’t know the name of but you know you’ve heard.”
Thursday nights will be Retrospect night and will feature all the disco music you can handle and a separate room dedicated just to the ’70s.
“There’s an old pinball game, a Pac-Man game and posters of Raquel Welch on the wall,” White said.
High Energy will be the weekend theme and will focus on popular ’90s dance music, from Will Smith to Puff Daddy.
Sundays at The Scene will take a break from music and serve the usual drinks and food.
Italian sandwiches, pizza, grinders and nachos will be available to munch on in the “comfortable” atmosphere The Scene will provide.
White is considering bringing in live bands and is leaning towards swing bands or something dance oriented.
“We have a rise in the club that could easily serve as a stage,” White said. “So live music is definitely a possibility.”
The main decor for The Scene is Iowa State’s nightlife. Pool tables and video games have also been added to give the club a college feel.
White is hoping all age groups will come in and check out The Scene, not just the under-21 age group.
“I’m really excited,” White said. “We think it will be a big hit.”
The Scene will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a $3 cover.
On Fridays and Saturdays it will stay open until 4 a.m. with a $5 cover. The Scene will stay open on Sundays until 10 p.m. with no cover.
A college I.D. or a 19 I.D. are required for admission.
Server, bartender and disc jockey positions are still open.
White encourages those interested to stop in and fill out an application.
