For only playing a handful of times during the summer, qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship isn’t bad.

Former Iowa State golfer Fiona Watson has not been able to focus on her own golf as much as she would like to. Her new responsibilities as new men’s and women’s assistant has kept her extremely busy, but she still shot a second-place 77 at the Kansas City Country Club on July 20 to qualify for the Championship. The top five competitors qualified.

“I’m really excited about qualifying because I haven’t played that much lately,” Watson said. “I’m looking forward to playing with a bunch of the best players in the world. The U.S. Amateur is a lot like a fifth major.”

The U.S. Amateur is the largest amateur open in the country, with 144 players.

The Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, Mich., will play host to this year’s tournament.

A native of Dumfries, Scotland, Watson graduated in four years while finishing her 1997-98 senior campaign with a team-low 78.5 stroke average.

Watson currently shares the school record for low 18-hole round, shooting a 70 at the 1997 Colorado Invitational.
