Farewell to Floyd

Tim, we hardly knew ye.

After only four years as head coach of the Iowa State men’s basketball team, Tim Floyd is leaving, presumably for the head coaching position with the Chicago Bulls.

His resignation, and the search for a new head coach, was announced Wednesday by Athletic Director Gene Smith.

“I am very thankful for what Tim has done for our program, for our student-athletes and for the Cyclone family,” Smith said during the press conference.

ISU fans are also thankful for Floyd’s coaching, especially the 81 Cyclone wins and three NCAA appearances. But ISU students and fans are also understandably miffed at Floyd’s decision to leave.

After Michael Jordan recently reiterated that he would play for no one but former Bulls coach Phil Jackson, Floyd commented that Jordan’s “greatest quality is his loyalty.” So, where is Floyd’s loyalty to the university that afforded him the opportunity to move to the NBA in the first place?

Marcus Fizer, ISU’s star sophomore basketball player, said earlier in the Floyd frenzy that the coach had promised to stay throughout Fizer’s collegiate career.

So much for promises.

But then again, promises in the college basketball world aren’t ever worth much.

Fans at New Orleans probably also felt betrayed when Floyd left for Ames, but that’s just the way it goes.

And honestly, who can blame Floyd for making the career move of his life?

He will probably take the reigns at the most successful NBA franchise of this decade. He will have the opportunity to coach some of the best basketball talent in the country. He may even get to coach one of the best players ever — Jordan.

So as Floyd packs his bags and heads to Chicago, we’re left with the program he helped build. There are worse legacies to leave.

Good luck, Coach. Here’s hoping the Bulls won’t all leave just as you arrive.
