Former ISU wrestlers compete for spot on world championship team

Five former Iowa State wrestlers will be competing this week for a spot on the World Championship Team that will travel to Iran later this summer. Cyclone alumni participating are Kevin Jackson, Mike VanArsdale, Eric Akin, Barry Weldon, and current ISU assistant Chris Bono.

All five were All-Americans for the Cyclones with Bono, Weldon, VanArsdale being National Champions.Jackson an Akin were runners-up.

Jackson won the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics at the 180.5 weight division. All five had at least 100 career victories, with the exception of Jackson. Bono led the way with 130 career victories, second all-time.

Rancik named to All-Star team

ISU sophomore Martin Rancik was named to the 1998 Big 12 All-Star team that will travel to Europe in August.

Rancik averaged 5.7 points his freshman year as a Cyclone.
