Connick the crooner
April 30, 1998
At the sound of his voice critics rave, women swoon and musicians are inspired.
With his sultry expressions and irreplaceable musical style, Harry Connick Jr. has brought pleasure to fans for years.
This weekend, Connick will take his style, his expressions and a full orchestra to the stage of Stephens Auditorium for a performance to support his latest album “To See You.”
“It will be a very romantic evening,” Connick said in a press release. “I won’t be doing as much running around as usual, but it will be a musical experience.”
According to a press release, “To See You” is the fulfillment of several of Connick’s musical dreams.
Connick had always wanted to record an album that included a combination of jazz quartet music and ballads for a full orchestra. On the album, Connick sang lead vocals, played piano, arranged and orchestrated the music and conducted every track.
“The songs combine the classical influence of the orchestra with the American popular song form,” Connick said.
“I surrounded the quartet with the orchestra, so between
vocal/orchestral passages, the quartet would play. Then the orchestra would come back in. It really was a unique experience.”
In addition to fulfilling Connick’s musical vision for the album, he also wanted to make an album entirely devoted to love and romance.
After a flight attendant requested that Connick make an album solely devoted to “romantic purposes,” he realized many of his albums include songs about love, but not one of them is completely dedicated to romance.
In keeping with Connick’s mission to create an album of romantic music, every track is a “sensual adagio.”
Connick also said because of the improvisational elements in play with the quartet, it was sometimes difficult to synchronize the orchestra.
“It’s difficult to [improvise] with 50 players in an orchestra, but with the quartet, we can go anywhere we want to,” he said.
According to a press release, “To See You,” the album’s title track, is a short, lush song originally written for the score to the film, “One Fine Day.”
“My albums are full of rejected movie themes,” Connick said. “This song expresses a simple sentiment: sometimes you just have to see your lover’s smile.”
Connick is no stranger to love.
Now that he’s a family man, he has more responsibilities than before. But, despite the new additions to the family, Connick said his life as a musician is the same as before.
“I am very happy in my personal life right now, but it doesn’t really have an effect on the music,” Connick said.
“I’ve always believed inspiration undermines the creative process. If I had to wait for a beautiful sunrise before I could create, I’d never write anything.”
Connick will perform Friday night in Stephen’s Auditorium at 7:30.
Tickets are available at the Iowa State Center and all TicketMaster locations.
