‘Perfect’ pets to highlight Vet Med activities on Saturday afternoon

Watch a sheep herding demonstration, find out what dog is best for you and pet an animal or two at the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veishea open house.

The open house will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 1010 at Vet Med. Various activities will be available for the entire family to enjoy.

A stuffed animal hospital will be open for children, where they can bring in their “injured” animals.

The various college representatives will stitch the animals up, add buttons and new stuffing and attach limbs such as arms and ears.

There also will be a sheep herding demonstration outside of Vet Med at 8:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Another activity available at the open house will be an interactive computer program, which will help families determine their ultimate pet.

For example, one program will tell what breed of dog will coordinate with a family’s lifestyle.

“To go along with ‘Veishea: A Time for Change,’ we will look at veterinary medicine,” said Julie Hansen, co-chairwoman and freshman in Vet Med.

She said the open house will emphasize the practice of veterinary medicine and how the practice is changing.

This annual open house event is always put on by freshman veterinary students.

Free parking will be available at Vet Med which is located near S. 16th Street.

“Last year we had about 1,500 people. We’d like to double it this year,” Hansen said.
