RCA, UDA and TRA to hold Veishea activities

Melodie Demulling

With this year’s “dry” Veishea celebration, many people will be in search of alcohol-free events to keep them busy throughout the weekend. For those Iowa State students living in the residence halls, they won’t have to look further than their backyards.

Along with the annual Veishea events like the parade and Mass Campaniling, the residence halls are teaming up with the Veishea committee to make more activities available to those living in the dorms.

There will be ultimate frisbee and volleyball tournaments for sports fans and bingo and an ice cream social for other participants.

Tournaments begin at 1 p.m. in the RCA courtyard, with the championship tournaments beginning at 4:30 p.m. Bingo will be played on the lawn in front of Oak-Elm between 1 and 2 p.m. And the ice cream social will follow the championship games at about 5:15 p.m.

Brian Tuftee, vice president of RCA, said anyone is welcome to participate in Saturday’s events. The organizers will be keeping track of how many people participate from RCA, and the two floors with the most participation will win color televisions for their house dens.

Towers Residence Association is joining the fun with Towers ExTRAvaganza in its courtyard. There will be tug-of-war games, a bungee run, a gladiator joust and bouncy boxing.

There will be free popcorn, root beer, snow cones, pickles and soda. All events are free, except for the dunk tank, where students can pay $1 to get three tries at dunking their favorite, or not so favorite resident assistant or hall director.

The event is to encourage the entire Cyclone family to come out to Towers instead of battling the crowds on Welch Avenue, said Tony Thrasher, president of TRA. Many of the events will be similar to those offered on Welch Avenue, he said.

Caricatures by Carmen Cerra, Iowa State Daily political cartoonist, will also be offered free of charge.

The games on Saturday will be from 3 to 7 p.m., and the dance will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight.

The Union Drive Association will join the other associations in helping to maintain a dry Veishea by hosting a casino night on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Westgate Lounge and a special dinner.
