Outsider’s view

Ann Stroeh

I went to Iowa State for two years right after high school. The cost of school got to be too much, and I had to leave. I do come down for Veishea every year to visit friends and family. I feel that I, as a visitor, am no longer welcome at Veishea. We are supposed to be celebrating. My Dad went to Iowa State and even taught some classes at the university, so I grew up knowing about Veishea. I am going to be traveling from Ohio to go to Veishea. I guess it is too bad that most of my friends are going to be going somewhere else thanks to the school and law enforcement. Why isn’t anybody worried about the tradition of Veishea? After all, isn’t this what it’s all about. It still seems like the greek system is being singled out for something that had nothing to do with them. From my point of view, the greek system puts a lot of time into Veishea, much more than the average student.

I look forward to this time every year, and it looks like I am going to be driving out for nothing. I hope the city and school takes a big step back and looks at what Veishea stands for.

I always thought Veishea was a representation of Iowa State University and should be a celebration. Shouldn’t we be embracing our visitors? Not only could they be future students, but they also could be alumni.
