The Iowa State Music Department will have a chance to celebrate the first days of spring this week.

As part of the faculty recital series, the ISU/Ames Flute Choir will be performing tonight under the direction of assistant professor of music Elizabeth Sadilek.

Following the Flute Choir, assistant professor of music Susan Flaskerund will be featured in a piano recital Friday night.

Normally featuring the flute, alto flute and piccolo, the ISU/Ames Flute Choir will have special additions to this performance, including flute trios, quartets and other uses of multiple flutes to create a variety of sounds and combine several diverse styles.

“A special thing about this concert is the beautiful, low sound of the bass flute,” Sadilek commented. “There is [also] a variety of sizes and a diversity of international composers.”

Czech composer Jindrich Feld, Russian composer Alexander Tcherepnin French composer Eugene Bozza, American composers Ralph Guenther and Anthony Holland and Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli will be featured in six songs in the performance.

“The biggest compliment is when everyone [in the audience] likes something different,” Sadilek commented.

Before the recital, community members and flutists Nicole Walker, Elizabeth Morse and Holly Helmer will perform balcony music.

On Friday night, Flaskerund will be performing a variety of piano pieces by Schubert, Scriabin, Brahms, Debussy and Rave. Flaskerund will also present the Iowa premiere of Robert Rathmell’s “Rhapsody.”

The ISU/Ames Flute Choir will perform tonight at 7:30 and Walker, Morse and Helmer will perform at 7:15. Susan Flaskerund’s piano recital is Friday night at 7:30.

Both of the recitals will be held in the Music Hall Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.
