ISU linksters get taste of Big 12 competition
April 16, 1998
In preparation for the Big 12 the Iowa State men’s golf team traveled to the Diet Pepsi/Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kansas. The Cyclones finished eighth out of 20 teams with a three-round total of 877, led by Matt Lewis.
“We didn’t play very well,” Coach Jamie Bermel said. “We just didn’t get it done when we had to. We played fairly well the first day and much better the second round.”
Lewis finished tied for 18th overall with a total of 224.
“Matt has been a little inconsistent this season, but he really played well on the final day, especially considering the windy conditions,” Bermel said. “He is finally playing back to his game and putting up the rounds he is capable of.”
Jon Brackmann carded a 226 to earn 27th, while Corey Chambers was just one shot behind with a 227. Aaron Patton and Adam Hart shot a 229 and 230 respectively for ISU.
Host Wichita State won the team title, with Shocker senior Frank Genzer took the medalist honors.
“We did beat some teams that we had to, like Colorado and Missouri, which will give us some confidence going into the Big 12s,” Bermel said.”
Over the weekend of April 27-28 the men will travel to Hutchinson, Kan., for the Big 12 Tournament. The Cyclones finished third in last season’s meet.
ISU will be looking to solidify its position in the midwest district and ultimately qualify for the regional meet. The top seven district teams will automatically be invited to the regional meet and the Cyclones are currently battling between the sixth and seventh spots.
“The guys know where they stand right now,” Bermel said. “They can stay with anybody if they get hot. There are only a couple of teams that we’ve played and haven’t beaten in the Big 12.”
