Rock Veishea moves from Lied Rec Center to Hilton

Editor’s Note: Due to early publishing deadlines, section C of the Daily’s Veishea special edition incorrectly states that Rock Veishea will take place in the Lied Recreation Center. The music festival has been moved to Hilton Coliseum.

The venue of this year’s Rock Veishea festival, which features Tonic, The Crystal Method, The Flaming Lips Experiment and 35″ Mudder, will shift from the Lied Recreation Center to Hilton Coliseum.

The switch to Hilton, the music festival’s initial venue, was a “collaborative effort” on the parts of the Veishea committee, the university and the Iowa State Center, said Brett Showalter, entertainment co-chairman for the Veishea committee.

Kathryn Whitaker, general co-chairwoman for the Veishea committee, said although the move was the result of various reasons, the primary goal focused on enabling more people to attend Rock Veishea, which is scheduled for Saturday night from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

“The rec is not designed for concerts, and Hilton is. We have the potential to accommodate more people,” she said. “Hilton is a quality facility.”

Hilton originally was turned down when the committee’s promoter resigned, according to Corey Moss, music coordinator for the Veishea entertainment committee.

“When the promoter dropped out, we thought we’d have a hard time finding bands capable of performing at that venue,” he said.

Moss said the entertainment committee is grateful to local promoter Tom Zmolek for landing the major bands for Rock Veishea.

Scott Desotel, entertainment co-chairman, said directing music fans to Hilton is a better idea because it will bring more prestige to Rock Veishea.

He also said the festival will be general admission, which is unusual for Hilton concerts.

“Hilton is one of the top venues in the nation,” he said.

Desotel said other issues such as insurance and fire codes factored into the decision for relocation.

“The main thing was logistics,” he said. “The rec wasn’t set up to handle it.”

Whitaker said rumors that university officials moved the location fearing potential student riots are false.

“The university has been there to help,” she said. “They take into account different factors. When they extend a hand, we take it.”

Thomas Hill, vice president for student affairs and administrative contact for the Veishea committee, said rioting was never a concern.

“All we’ve done is help [the Veishea committee] get this thing done,” Hill said. “It was always designed for student participation — to get more students involved. A riot is not why we moved it.”

Moss added that the venue switch won’t affect the mood of Rock Veishea.

“We’re doing our best to keep the festival atmosphere,” he said.

Because new tickets will not be printed, students who purchased tickets preceding the venue change are not required to exchange them, Whitaker said.

Moss said the first 1,000 people to arrive at the lower west entrance of Hilton for the event will receive a special wristband and have access to floor seating.

For access to general seating in the parquet section, students must have their tickets and ID, Whitaker said.

“They need to bring proper ID like when they bought their tickets. We will be checking IDs,” she said.

General admission is available at the upper west and south doors of Hilton.

Tickets for Rock Veishea will be sold at a student discount price of $3 for the remainder of the week in the West Student Office Space of the Memorial Union.

A $5 advanced ticket package is also available for Dew the Rec and Rock Veishea.

Ticket prices will increase to $5 on Saturday and will be sold from 7 p.m. to midnight in the ticket office below the south entrance to Hilton.

Doors open for Rock Veishea at 8 p.m.
