Police investigate motel stabbing
April 5, 1998
A woman currently involved in a lawsuit against the Story County Sheriff’s Office has been named in an unconfirmed report of a stabbing Saturday morning at the University Inn, 316 S. Duff.
The Daily has learned that Robin Hill, 35, who has gained recent prominence due to her lawsuit against Story County Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald and six deputies, is apparently involved in the alleged stabbing at the hotel.
According to a news report from KASI radio Saturday, Hill was taken into custody at the motel by the Ames Police Department and charged with interference with official acts.
A KASI employee said the report had been phoned in on Saturday, but the station was not aware of the caller’s identity.
At press time it was not known if Hill is being investigated as an assailant in the stabbing or if she is being charged with the alleged stabbing.
An Ames Police spokesman said the department had no official statement and would not release any information on Sunday.
The KASI report said a car driven by Ames resident Horace Fleener, 63, left the University Inn parking lot “at a high rate of speed.”
According to the report, Ames Police Capt. Jerry Snyder was responding to a report of the stabbing and arrived on the scene at about the same time Fleener was leaving.
Snyder then chased Fleener for about two blocks, but when he tried to pull Fleener over, Fleener apparently tried to ram Snyder’s patrol car, the report stated.
It was not clear from the news report whether Fleener had in fact been stabbed, but a Mary Greeley Medical Center spokeswoman said he was treated for a stab wound and released “around noon” on Saturday.
“It was not serious enough to admit him to the hospital,” she said.
As of Saturday, Fleener was in custody and facing traffic violations charges, according to KASI.
When called at home about the incident, Fleener said he did not want to comment on the stabbing, but he did say he had no memory of anything happening.
“I don’t want to talk to anyone about it,” Fleener said. “In fact, as far as I’m concerned, I fell.”
Hill is currently being represented by the Iowa Civil Liberties Union in her sexual exploitation lawsuit against the Story County Sheriff’s Department.
The lawsuit, filed in federal district court, alleges that Hill, while being held in custody at the Story County Jail, was strapped completely naked to a wooden “door-like contraption” in a spread-eagle fashion.
The lawsuit also states that Hill was left in a room uncovered for an undetermined period of time and was also forced to walk naked in front of several deputies.
The suit which the ICLU says is “extraordinary” is asking for unspecified monetary damages.
The sheriff’s office has released press statements denying the charges.
