A format change in Dew time

In keeping with this year’s Veishea theme, “A Time For Change,” Rock Da Rec has become Dew the Rec for the 1998 Veishea celebration.

“In the past, people have complained about how poor the entertainment is,” Dew the Rec co-chairman Matt Schaefer said. “We changed the whole format.”

Schaefer said the decision to change the format came about because it was important to help maintain the Veishea theme for this year, and because Dew the Rec would provide a great alternative to drinking.

“We’re hoping everybody in the ISU community — students, faculty and staff, alumni — will be able to come together and have non-alcoholic fun,” Schaefer said.

As far as the new name is concerned, Schaefer said Pepsi is one of the largest sponsors of the Rec party this year.

“Actually, we were able to put all of this on because of Iowa State” Schaefer said, stating that the university helped with many events by providing much of the funding.

In hoping to reach a target audience of 3,000 to 4,000 people, the Dew the Rec party is more structured this year, Schaefer said.

There will be no casino night and no games at the Rec, but there are several performers scheduled, including The Nadas and former “Saturday Night Live” comedian Kevin Nealon.

“I think a lot of us grew up watching Kevin Nealon,” Schaefer said. The doors open at 10 p.m. with shows scheduled to last until 2 a.m.
